NATURALS IN NAIROBI presents Curl Talk with Felicia Leatherwood

AJANI Handmade was privileged to have participated in the Naturals in Nairobi Curl Talk event with celebrity natural hair stylist, Felicia Leatherwood held in November 2015! Felicia is hailed as the Natural Hair industry’s “Hair Whisperer”, and is responsible for the red carpet looks of Viola Davis, Jill Scott, and Nicole Ari Parker just to name a few! So in that respect,  this event was actually a very big deal for the natural hair community in Kenya, just to be able to connect with such talent, based so far apart.

Apart from being great at what she does, Felicia was very sweet and approachable, dishing on all the best practices for natural hair care and styling and also had a few live demonstrations. There were two very interesting panel discussions that ran over the two days and it was truly a weekend treat!

There was an array of other wonderful natural hair care vendors and it is absolutely amazing and impressive just how top notch Kenyan brands are with branding and delivery of quality!

This event and get- together marked a big space for the natural hair community and industry in Nairobi and we feel so honoured and excited to have been a part of this wonderful movement!

Also present were the wonderful ladies of Tricia Naturals and Kurlly Diaries, two natural hair communities in Kenya, as well as media personality Carol Odero and the lovely ladies of Kurly Kichana, a natural hair blog that helped many women in Nairobi figure it all out at a time when there was little representation of natural hair in Kenya. This was an amazing weekend spent learning and networking with very many wonderful women!

We cannot wait for the next edition!

    1. Comment author AJANI Handmade,

      Hi Sarah.

Thank you for inquiring. Getting to know our hair in its natural state is a wonderful and interesting journey to embark on! To understand your hair type from the onset, you can have a look at our post on hair typing and basic hair care here: http://www.ajanihandmade.com/2015/04/hair-typing-good/. A lot of self driven research and experimentation on proper techniques will help you get to know what works for your hair and how to maintain it. At the basis of natural hair care is moisture and strand preservation, meaning to keep your hair regularly moisturized and protecting your strands from damaging processes such as heat and manipulation. In the case of your hairline, to regain any possibility of growth, leaving your hairline undisturbed from braiding, weaving and any pulling whatsoever should help. To help with stimulating your follicles for growth, regularly massaging hairline with castor oil and peppermint oil has been reported to be of use. Our peppermint and rosemary elixir has both these wonderful ingredients and can be purchased here: http://www.ajanihandmade.com/shop/peppermint-rosemary-essential-oil-elixir/.

I hope that this was helpful!
